Bohinj apartments offer great holiday accommodation

Bohinj

Bohinj is located in the heart of the Julian Alps, the most extensive and highest mountain range in Slovenia and the most south-eastern part of the Alps. It covers the valley of Nomenj, Upper and Lower Bohinj Valleys, the Pokljuka and Jelovica plateaus, lake basin and a high mountain range. The most recognisable and astonishing natural site of this area is Lake Bohinj, the biggest lake in Slovenia. The twenty-four villages in and above the valley hide the attractive riches of the past, the cheerfulness of the present and the mystery of the future. Bohinj abounds in unique natural beauties and spectacular landscapes.

The lake itself is located in a glacial valley and it comprises almost 100 million cubic metres of water. The steeply descending lake basin is smooth and has no shallow areas. In summer, the temperature of the water rises to 22 °C, while in the winter the lake sometimes freezes. After the heavy rainfall water level rises 2 – 3 metres. The lakeˈs length is 4100 m (the longest diagonal) and maximum width 1200 m. Its highest depth is 45 m and it has approximately 11.35 km of shore. At the end of the last glacial period, Lake Bohinj was about 18 metres higher, extending all the way to the village of Stara Fužina. Only one tenth of it is shallower than 10 metres, as much as 80 % deeper than 20, and 20 % even deeper than 40 metres. Lake Bohinj is home to 65 algae species, 8 mollusc species and 5 fish species. Lake Bohinj is perfect for water activities like swimming, boat riding, wind surfing, kayaking or canoeing, fishing and diving in warmer months, to even ice skating in winter. Visitors can also take a wonderful tourist boat rides, take hikes or simply go for a relaxing walk along the shore. In winter Bohinj is also a very popular destination for skiing tourism, as there are quite a few places where you can sky in its near proximity.
